Manic Monday will be year’s busiest shopping period

Posted: 27th Nov 2014

Analysts have predicted that Monday December 8th, otherwise known as Manic Monday, will be the UK’s most prolific day for safe shopping online, according to the International Business Times.

It will outstrip Black Friday in terms of overall sales, with IMRG experts estimating that Brits will spend a combined £470,000 a minute throughout the day, leading to £676.5 million in purchases over the total 24 hour period.

Black Friday, which takes place on November 28th, is a little way behind this total, with just over £555 million likely to fly from consumers’ bank accounts and into the coffers of retailers.

Even Cyber Monday, which falls a week earlier than Manic Monday, is going to be a slightly quieter period overall, in spite of pushing retailer’s e-commerce sites to their limits.

Because of this shopping boom during the working week, many people will, doubtlessly, be carrying out safe shopping online while at their desks, or using their smartphones and tablets during the commute.

Experian spokesperson, James Miller, revealed that all signs are pointing to a record-breaking Christmas for the e-commerce market, with spending continuing to occur, even on December 25th. Since online outlets do not actually need to be manned by staff, people can buy items even on days when the high street stores are closed.

IMRG spokesperson, Tina Spooner, said that Black Friday was making the transition from being a US retail event to becoming a staple of the UK’s retail calendar. But the first two weeks of December will be even more frantic, as people prepare for Christmas.

Online retailers are going to reap the benefits whatever the case, with several billion pounds up for grabs over the next few weeks, as shoppers attempt to stave off the winter blues with a few comforting purchases.
